PDF Guy de Maupassant and his account of sleep paralysis
Sleepwalking and related disorders are the result of factors that predispose, prime and precipitate episodes. In the absence of one or more of these factors sleepwalking is unlikely to occur. Predisposition to sleepwalking is based on genetic susceptibility and has a familial pattern. Priming factor … Sleepwalking can be prevented if you’re woken up just before a sleepwalking episode is due to occur. The timing of sleepwalking episodes are actually quite regular. They often happen around 2 hours into sleep, just as you enter into NREM stage 3 (deep sleep).

Sleepwalking, or somnambulism, is perhaps the best-known arousal disorder. Sleepwalking occurs when a person appears to be awake and moving around but is actually asleep. Sleepwalkers have no memory of their actions. Sleepwalking most often occurs during deep non-REM sleep (stages 3 and 4 sleep) early in the night. Talking during deeper sleep (NREM sleep, stages three and four) just sounds like gibberish.

Sleepwalking appears to run in families. Sleepwalking can sometimes be dangerous because the sleepwalker is unaware of his or her surroundings and can bump into objects or fall down. When does sleepwalking occur? Our sleep cycle is divided into non-REM (non-rapid eye movement) and REM (rapid eye movement).

Subtle sleep disorders associated with chronic sleepwalking constitute the unstable NREM sleep background on which sleepwalking events occur. A subtle associated sleep disorder should be systematically searched for and treated in the presence of sleepwalking with abnormal CAP. In addition, a number of sleep disorders can also promote the unstable NREM sleep background on which DoA and SHE events occur. The triggering role of sleep deprivation (2, 36), medications; (37 Sleepwalking belongs to a family of sleep disorders called parasomnia. This occurs on the cycles of non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM sleep) during deep sleep. Although it can still occur during the light stages of NREM several hours before transitioning to a sleep state.
At the same time, major muscles that you normally control (such as arms and legs) can’t move. In effect, they become temporarily paralyzed. Usually, REM sleep arrives about an hour and a half after you go to sleep. NREM sleep is when you tend to toss and turn in bed.

Sleepwalking is much more common in children and young adults than in older adults. This is because as people age, they have less N3 sleep. Sleepwalking tends to run in families. Sleepwalking, however, mostly occurs earlier in the cycle during non-REM sleep; sometimes it can closer to the morning hours nearing wakefulness.
