The Carnegies were a well established family from Carmyllie in Angus, the principal branch of which occupied the lands of the South Esk River. When the main branch died out the chieftaincy of the clan was acquired by the Carnegies of Kinnaird, a town near Brechin. David Carnegie, 1st Earl of Southesk was born in 1575. David had one brother: John Carnegie 1st Earl of Northesk. David passed away in 1658, at age 83.
